A deeper blue.A better‑planned journey.

Understand the roads, choose a walk and stay on the right side of the mountain. During the 2026–2028 Cleetwood project, plan for views from the rim, without public shoreline access or boat trips.

One lake, many ways to visit

The right approach changes the whole trip.

Crater Lake sits in a mountain caldera, with seasonal roads, long winters and very different gateway towns. The best plan connects a realistic route with the experience your group wants.

Start with open entrances and current notices, then choose between short rim views, a demanding summit trail or a wider southern Oregon journey. Give the lake a weather window and choose accommodation that fits the actual road network.

01

Choose an open entrance

South and West approaches differ from the seasonal North Entrance. Route your trip to a named destination such as Rim Village.

02

Match the walk to the group

A paved rim view, Watchman, Garfield Peak and Mount Scott involve different surfaces, climbing and exposure.

03

Allow another viewing window

Clouds, snow or smoke can obscure the lake. An overnight stay adds flexibility, not a guarantee of clear conditions.

Where to stay

Sleep on the side you will actually use.

Compare Fort Klamath, Union Creek and larger gateway towns by the open entrance. A property with Crater Lake in its name is not necessarily in the park; lake-view rooms may face another lake.

Plan for the rim during the shoreline project

Checked 4 November 2026: NPS lists Cleetwood Cove and public boat access as closed for the 2026, 2027 and 2028 summer seasons. North Entrance and most rim roads are also closed for winter under the 26 October notice. Other access depends on current conditions.
